What is Burdock Root?
Gobo or Burdock belongs to the same family as the daisy, where it can grow up to 3 metres and the root can grow to 1 metre in length. Burdock root has a crisp, sweet taste and is similar to artichoke and bamboo shoots but with a more distinct woody aroma. It is cultivated as vegetable and widely eaten in Japan.
Burdock root has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as a cold remedy, diuretic, diaphoretic and as a blood-purifying agent. It is also used to promote blood circulation to the skin surface, and curing skin diseases like eczema. Antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds as well as vitamins and minerals have also been found in the root. The root also contains water-soluble fibre Inulin.
